Ten

I've never had the experience of being 'nicked' as they say—arrested, or taken into police custody.

There was that one time at Ascot, but I don't consider that the same. I had wandered into the stabling area and there just happened to be one of my aunt's horses, saddled as others were ridden to the starting stalls. I had managed to 'acquire' a set of silks and proceeded to leg-up with the other jockeys.

I made it to the starting stalls without being discovered and before Jimmy Balfour, my aunt's jockey, had alerted race staff. And as they say, the rest was history. The race started and we were off!

My aunt's horse was disqualified when it was discovered that Jimmie was not aboard. And there had been several constables, race officials, along with my aunt and Jimmie waiting when I returned to the stabling area, covered in mud, grinning from ear to ear—it was most exciting.

The race officials grumbled amongst themselves while Jimmie tried to explain just how I had managed it, and my aunt fought back laughter over the entire matter.

In the end I was banned from riding at Ascot—not that it was any loss, as there were other adventures that beckoned; the police were persuaded that there were no charges to be brought against me, and my aunt swore to all that I had her permission in the caper.

Now, I was at police headquarters in the room adjoining Chief Inspector Abberline's office. A uniformed constable stood guard in the event I tried to escape while I listened to the conversation that alternately rattled the door with Abberline's furious comments.

"Miss Forsythe was found at the scene of a crime!" he informed Brodie. "Standing over the body of the deceased! I have every right to have her arrested and charges brought!" Abberline thundered.

I then listened with curiosity for what Brodie's response might be as he had threatened to throw me to the police on more than once occasion. Granted, that was in a fit if temper that had soon passed. However, this was his opportunity as it were.

"She was acting in her in the course of investigating a case in the matter of the death at the Crystal Palace," he calmly replied.

"What bloody case?" Abberline demanded.

"In the matter of the case that Monsieur Betard has retained us to investigate," Brodie explained in a still-calm voice.

"A case," Abberline replied. I heard the disdain at his voice. "You're telling me that Miss Forsythe is an associate or partner in your investigations? That is the most absurd thing I have ever heard."

"Quite so, and invaluable in the resolution in the matter of at least three previous cases that I believe you are well aware of."

I smiled to myself, quite enjoying this in spite of the seriousness of the matter.

"And she just happened to be at the Metropole and stumbled across the dead woman!" Abberline replied.

"She was following up information she had in the matter," Brodie replied. "She had my authorization to do so."

A slight stretch of the truth, however I was touched by his words, defending me.
